Minister Gives Free UTME Forms To 5,000 Admission Seekers

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, at the weekend, began the distribution of free Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forms to eligible admission seekers.

Fayemi also kick-started a free Computer-Based Training (CBT) training for candidates to boost their chances of success at the examination organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The daily free CBT training is held at JKF Leadership Centre on Ajilosun Road, Ado-Ekiti, the capital.

About 5,000 candidates are expected to benefit from the scheme.

Addressing beneficiaries from all 16 councils, Fayemi expressed delight at the large turnout of participants.

The former governor said the distribution of free UTME forms was one of the policies of his administration which, according to him, was allegedly stopped by the Ayo Fayose administration.

To ensure speedy registration of participants, the minister promised to empower the centre with more facilities.

He said: “I am happy to see you here. I would have loved to sit with you at this training, if not for my tight schedule. When we were in government, the state used to be responsible for this scheme. But the situation has changed today.

“I want to assure you that I am committed to ensuring that nothing inhibits your determination to achieve your dreams. It is our commitment and passion for education. This is part of a number of steps we are putting in place for you to actualise your dreams. Education is our pride in Ekiti.”

A beneficiary, Esther Ibitoye, thanked the minister, saying she would not have had the opportunity, if Fayemi had not come to her aid.

Another beneficiary, Moshood Adabiri, promised to perform well in the examination to justify the minister’s investment in the scheme.

The centre’s Programme Officer Bisi Dada and the All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth leader Femi Ogundare said beneficiaries were drawn from the 16 councils and 177 wards.

They said some youths, who had obtained the forms from other sources, also enrolled for the CBT training.

To ensure a wider reach, the officers pledged to begin a mobile CBT training.

The Joseph Ayo Babalola University, Ikeji Arakeji, Osun State, said it has offered partial scholarships to all students of the institution.

The vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Sola Fajana, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on the campus of the institution.

According to him, the university came up with the scholarship policy in order to make studying in the institution attractive and to also encourage the students of religious studies.

Explaining the new policy further, the VC said all students of the institution would be given 10 percent reduction in their school fees.

Fajana said, “There will be 15 percent school reduction for parents who have two students in our school, 20 percent reduction for students who are members of the Christ Apostolic Church, while members of staff of the institution who are students will have their school fees reduced by 15 percent.

“There will be 40 percent discount for non-CAC students studying religious studies, while pastors or wives of pastors studying religious studies will enjoy 60 percent discount in their school fees.

“C.A.C students studying religious studies will have 50 percent discount in their fees. ”

He said the management of the university was committed to making studying in the university conducive for all students.

“We have resolved to make living on our campus more conducive and comfortable for our students, and we want to be known as the go-to place for our immediate and remote communities to have their problems solved,” Fajana stated.

Yoruba Language Now A Compulsory Admission Requirement In Lagos State Tertiary Institutions

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode last Thursday signed seven bills into law among which is the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law.

With this Law in place, any student who wish to apply for admission into University of Lagos or other higher institutions in Lagos State will need to have a Credit Pass in Youruba Language regardless of their intended course of study.

In addition, all state-owned tertiary institutions are to incorporate the use of Yoruba Language in the General Studies (GNS) courses.

The Law equally stated that any school in Lagos State that fails to comply with the provisions of Section 2 commits an offence and is liable on first violation to issuance of warning and on subsequent violation be closed down and also pay a fine of N500,000.

This has attracted mixed reactions from the public. While some are in support of this development, others are not for obvious reasons. Whats your take on this?

Minister Proposes Extra One Year Of Re-schooling For University Graduates

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, has put forward a proposal for Nigerian students to spend extra year in specialized institutions after graduation to make them employable.
This was during the ongoing Retreat for Governing Councils of Nigerian Federal Universities, organized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) with the theme, “Elements of Statutory Governance, Procurement and Financial Accounting in Nigerian Universities.”
He said the suggestion was being made because many university graduates were not good enough to be employed by industries.

“Law students attend Law School for one year before going for NYSC and medical students go for one year Houseman ship before they are allowed to practice fully, so it will be necessary for other courses to also go through this process,” Mr Anwukah said.

“The Lagos Business School can also serve as a one year after-school training,” he added.

The further stated that the industrial traing that was introduced into the University system to bridge this gap has failed in doing that.

Reacting to this, Professor of Developmental Education, University of Abuja, Prof Salisu Ingawa said that is not the solution and it may never work due to the fact that it will be cost intensive and may take a long time to be implemented.

Also a professor of communication at Bayero University Kano, (BUK) Prof Umaru Pate said it might be difficult but that, it is ideal but the implementation is going to be problematic.

Prof Pate said the industries to absolve the graduate when they come may not be readily available and that could mean that the candidates would have to line up for them to be absolved.
